Poggio Vaccaio (Cawhill) is located in the middle of a very cultural and historical area from which the most important artistic and spiritual centers may be reached in about one hour driving.
Among them worth seeing are: the town of Chiusi with famous Etruscan tombs; Assisi (the birthplace of St. Francis); La Verna Monastery (the mountain where St. Francis got the stigmata in his body); the town of Orvieto which its famous cathedral, the nearby old town of Civita di Bagnoregio which was destroyed and split into two areas by a terrific earthquake long time ago, and is connected at present by a very long bridge; Pienza, the only Renaissance town remained untouched for centuries; the town of Montepulciano, renown for its medieval alleys and a delicious red wine, (Nobile di Montepulciano); the XII-XIII century Cistercian Abbey of St. Galgan, famous in the whole world for the crusader-monk who planted his sword in rock to say good by to the war, and that sword is still there, inside a big rok, like the famous Escalibur; the little town of Montalcino famous for its rare red wine (the Brunello) and a large Abbey of Sant‘Antimo, dating back to Charles the Great, IX century.
Large historical cities may also be easily reached like Spello, Perugia, Arezzo, San Gimignano, famous for its towers dating back to the XII century, as well as Siena and Florence.
Also many towns with mineral springs for cures and beauty treatment may easily reached such as Chianciano, Sarteano, San Casciano bagni, Sant’Albino. They are all located att less than 15-20 miles from Porto.
The area is also full of typical restaurant where you may taste the delicious Tuscan and Umbrian dishes with an unrvalled red wine.
